Meet Zayda

Zayda's story

HRT Access Fund recipient

Zayda

Zayda (she/her) has struggled in finding the funds to support her goals in her transition, having an incredibly supportive family, caring friend group, and incredible partner. Due to her limited education, it’s been difficult to find any employment opportunities that provide enough money to support her and her medical care. "When your goal is just to survive, gender-affirming care has to become a secondary priority," Zayda shared.

She loves spending her free time playing video games, writing, and studying programming. She also enjoys fitness and assisting in local charity programs. To Zayda, there is no greater joy then knowing that she will wake up everyday with the medical care and support for her to continue becoming the person she always wanted to be!

Seeing all the amazing changes that HRT had been able to bring me and finally feeling comfortable and proud in my own skin has really made me feel like I finally have a lease on life. Not having to worry about the medical expenses of my transition has allowed me to pursue so many more interpersonal and career opportunities that I never would have had it not been for the help I received."

About Estrogen+

On average, it costs $1,700+/year for Zayda's care.

What is it?

Estrogen+ refers to the gender-affirming hormone replacement therapy (HRT) methods that some trans women, trans femme, and non-binary people take that result in physical changes which align with their gender identity. Every person's preferences and personal healthcare needs vary, so this can include oral medications, injections, and transdermal patches.

How accessible is it for trans folks to receive this care?

For trans folks who live in states most impacted by anti-trans healthcare legislation, it can be extremely difficult to find a knowledgeable, trans-affirming provider as well as access prescription medication. Many insurance plans do not cover HRT. For trans folks without insurance coverage, the ongoing out-of-pocket expense can be challenging.

What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?

Estogen+ introduces a wide range of feminizing physical, emotional, and psychological changes that align with their gender identity. This often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, increased safety when in public, and better opportunities at employment and more.
