Xander's story

Electrolysis Support Fund recipient

Xander (he/him) is an Indigenous Two-Spirit trans person seeking permanent hair removal on his forearm before his upcoming surgery.

Completing hair removal is essential to prevent medical complications. "I want to be able to walk freely in gym showers and other spaces without fear of ridicule or not being safe. I long to feel day-to-day joy catching myself in the mirror as I step into my shower at home, and feel at peace within my body," he explains. Access to this gender-affirming care is crucial for Xander's physical health and emotional well-being, helping him to live his life with confidence and pride.

What is life like for a person who needs this care?

Electrolysis and laser hair removal services are often deemed cosmetic and therefore not covered by health insurance plans, even if such services are medical prerequisites for a covered surgery. For people who cannot afford hair removal, they are stuck without options to move forward with their healthcare needs.

What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?

After completing hair removal, these folks are able to move forward with their surgeries. In itself, this often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, and more.
