Meet X

X's story
Annual Trans Surgery Fund recipient
X (they/he/she) is a 41-year-old Black agender and gender non-conforming person from California seeking hysterectomy.
X grew up in homeless shelters and foster care; for a period of time, they were living on Skid Row. "I work full-time now, but have no benefits, low-wage, no PTO," X shares. "I couldn't afford to keep up with my health insurance premium, so they cut me off months ago." To be able to access transition-related care, X has had to pay out-of-pocket, which has been difficult given their financial situation. In addition, X struggled to find a trans-competent care provider who would even consider taking them on as a patient.
X describes themself as a passionate volunteer for several organizations. They love engaging with the LGBTQ+ community: "This community is the only family I know."

X shared, "Point of Pride took a huge stressor off my mind. I'm out of limbo. I had to stop proceeding last year because of the money struggles with the tests and labs and had to stop the year before because I couldn't find a doctor to even talk to me.
Anyways, life has it's ups and downs, mostly downs, right now, but I feel great about/after the surgery.
Every now and then it pops into my head, "I don't have a uterus." It brings a smile to my face. Physically, I don't feel anything, but there is a euphoria knowing it's not there. I love not having a uterus.
Point of Pride's help was a huge stress reliever. Years of stress, allieved. Decades of gender dysphoria from having a uterus and estrogen dominance, allieved.
This has been an unbelievable gift."

What is it?
A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure involving the removal of the uterus.
What is life like for a person who needs this care?
Before care, some trans people experience gender dysphoria related to having a uterus. Menstruation, the possibility of pregnancy, or hormonal fluctuations can contribute to distress. Additionally, some seek a hysterectomy to align their body with their medical transition and long-term health needs.
How accessible is it for trans folks to receive this care?
Many trans and non-binary individuals seek a hysterectomy for gender-affirming care. Many others, however, also have additional medical concerns, including the treatment of uterine fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic pain, and certain types of cancers. Too often, trans folks who seek care with these additional medical concerns are still denied insurance coverage. It can also be hard for trans folks to find affirming surgeons in their region, especially in states and regions most impacted by anti-trans healthcare legislation.
What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?
Many trans people who undergo hysterectomy report a significant reduction in dysphoria and an improved sense of well-being. The procedure can lead to greater physical comfort, mental health benefits, and a deeper connection with their gender identity.
