Meet Vee

Vee's story
Annual Trans Surgery Fund recipient
Vee’s (they/them) journey to obtaining gender-affirming care has been shaped by resilience and persistence. As a disabled trans nonbinary veteran, they rely on disability benefits for essential living expenses, but these funds do not cover the cost of surgery. While they take on part-time dog sitting to supplement their income, the inconsistency of clients makes it challenging to save for medical expenses. Despite these barriers, Vee remains committed to securing the care they need, navigating financial and systemic obstacles with determination.
Beyond their trans identity, Vee is a multifaceted individual with a passion for technology and community. They are currently enrolled in a cybersecurity program, working toward certification to transition into a tech career. In addition to their studies, they find joy and connection through their local trans basketball league, where they build friendships and stay active. Their life is shaped by resilience, curiosity, and a commitment to growth, both personally and professionally.
Receiving gender-affirming healthcare would bring Vee a profound sense of alignment and ease in their day-to-day life. The physical and emotional relief would allow them to focus more on their career goals, social life, and overall well-being without the constant weight of dysphoria. It would also strengthen their ability to engage with their community, both in cybersecurity and in trans advocacy, with greater confidence and authenticity. For Vee, this care is not just medical—it’s a vital step toward a more fulfilling and empowered life.

What is it?
FTM/N top surgery is a surgical procedure that removes breast tissue and reshapes the chest contour to create a more traditionally masculine or gender-neutral appearance.
What is life like for a person who needs this care?
Prior to care, many trans masc people experience dysphoria that impacts their daily life. One of the most common and heartbreaking experiences we hear from applicants is that they cannot give hugs to their loved ones without feeling intense distress with their chest. In addition, reliance on chest binding can cause strain over long periods of time.
How accessible is it for trans folks to receive this care?
While top surgery is often categorized as a covered benefit in many insurance plans, the reality is that it's frequently denied coverage. Many people report unsuccessful attempts to appeal for coverage. In addition, finding skilled surgeons experienced in performing top surgery can be extremely challenging, particularly in states and regions most affected by anti-trans healthcare legislation.
What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?
Many trans folks who undergo top surgery report massive improvements to their overall well-being and mental health, leading to increased confidence and more comfort in relationships, navigating public spaces, and more.
