Meet Silas
Silas' story
Electrolysis Support Fund recipient
Silas (he/him) has been struggling financially for quite some time. In 2021, he had to unexpectedly move out of his last place, which he shared with a roommate, due to a home disaster that took weeks to fix. During that time, he stayed in hotels or with friends, and when he finally got a place alone, he paid thousands in bills.
His income has been very spotty since he's stuck in a small college town without much opportunity. "Every job here pays terribly, and the good-paying ones are only for people with degrees. I couldn't afford college," Silas shares.
Currently, Silas works four jobs—Doordash, Domino's, Walmart, and Rover dog sitting—to make ends meet, typically working 60-hour weeks. Despite this, he's still always broke and feels down and depressed over not being able to afford surgery. Receiving support toward the prerequisite hair removal will alleviate some of the financial burdens he's facing.

What is it?
Point of Pride provides grants to trans masc people seeking hair removal on an area of their body in preparation for bottom surgery.
What is life like for a person who needs this care?
Electrolysis and laser hair removal services are often deemed cosmetic and therefore not covered by health insurance plans, even if such services are medical prerequisites for a covered surgery. For people who cannot afford hair removal, they are stuck without options to move forward with their healthcare needs.
What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?
After completing hair removal, these folks are able to move forward with their surgeries. In itself, this often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, and more.
