Meet Shinobi

Shinobi

Shinobi's story

Electrolysis Support Fund recipient

Shinobi (they/them) is an Indigenous and Black gender non-conforming person.

"At 16, my family rejected me because of my trans status. I have been chronically homeless since that time and have also dealt with various debilitating health issues that have kept me from pursuing meaningful employment and schooling opportunities," Shinobi explains.

"I was born in the Bronx and used to work in TV until I fell victim to a religiously-motivated hate crime I've yet to fully recover from," Shinobi shares. In the meantime, they have devoted themselves to community organizing inspired by their Indigenous spiritual beliefs.

They are fortunate not to have any dermatological issues such as cystic acne or skin sensitivity, but money for razors often ends up being needed for food. "I am not often in stable enough housing situations to have the free time and comfort to tweeze," Shinobi adds. "Free hair removal services would not only improve my self-image but my overall quality of life and ability to improve my life circumstances in a meaningful way."

About Hair Removal: Femme Award

On average, it costs $2,300+ for Shinobi's care.

What is it?

Point of Pride provides grants to trans femme people seeking hair removal on their face, neck, or an area of the body in preparation for bottom surgery.

What is life like for a person who needs this care?

For trans femme folks, particularly trans femmes of color, access to facial hair removal often equates to safety against anti-trans violence or discrimination. It's common for applicants to note issues with employment and public safety, particularly if their facial hair is dark or thick. Electrolysis and laser hair removal services are often deemed cosmetic and therefore not covered by health insurance plans.

What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?

Access to hair removal often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, increased safety when in public, and better opportunities at employment and more.
