Ryan

Ryan's story

HRT Access Fund recipient

Ryan (he/they) is a 23-year-old trans masculine person who has lived their entire life in Florida. Based on recent laws passed in Florida, they were dropped without notice from their physician and had no choice but to stop HRT for more than a year. After being on a wait-list for a doctor’s office for months, Ryan was able to obtain a prescription again but it became inaccessible due to cost. Once again, he was forced to stop taking hormones. The stress of when he will regularly be on hormones again has caused severe anxiety as well as constant dysphoria. Ryan is worried the political climate in Florida will continue to render his progression as well as other LGBTQ+ residents.

Ryan serves in AmeriCorps NCCC and is passionate about service/volunteer work. He is planning to return to college for an environmental science degree and wants to work in local non-profits. Ryan lives with his fiancé and two lizards.

With the promise of a year of HRT without barriers, Ryan is able to release the anxiety of the next steps. He can focus on returning to school to finish a degree and work towards his future in non-profits. Consistent hormone replacement therapy will allow him to feel in control of his mental wellness and confident in his appearance again. Ryan will value the care given by Point of Pride as someone who has been disowned by his family, to know there is support and love for trans-ness out there in the world.

About Testosterone+

On average, it costs $1,200+/year for Ryan's care.

What is it?

Testosterone+ refers to the gender-affirming hormone replacement therapy (HRT) methods that some trans men, trans masc, and non-binary people take that result in physical changes which align with their gender identity. Every person's preferences and personal healthcare needs vary, so this can include oral medications, injections, and transdermal patches.

How accessible is it for trans folks to receive this care?

For trans folks who live in states most impacted by anti-trans healthcare legislation, it can be extremely difficult to find a knowledgeable, trans-affirming provider as well as access prescription medication. Many insurance plans do not cover HRT. For trans folks without insurance coverage, the ongoing out-of-pocket expense can be challenging.

What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?

Testosterone+ introduces a wide range of masculinizing physical, emotional, and psychological changes that align with their gender identity. This often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, increased safety when in public, and better opportunities at employment and more.
