Rosen's story

Thrive Fund recipient

Rosen (zhe/he) is a Black autistic nonbinary man of Jamaican heritage, a Southerner born and raised in Florida. For zhir graduate thesis in Africana Women's Studies, Rosen will be conducting oral histories with binary transgender, nonbinary, and non-cisgender Black Jamaican people to discuss how they disrupt colonization and enslavement. Considering expansive experiences of gender are rooted in African culture and history, Rosen hopes to show how we can experience gender joy in ways that are culturally affirming.

For Rosen, top surgery will enable him to feel more confident and comfortable with the feeling of and appearance of his chest, and body in general. Despite financial uncertainties, Rosen remains determined to get top surgery this year. Rosen is disabled and neurodivergent, so zhe knew zhe would have difficulty doing post-operative care (such as changing drains) on his own. Rosen wants to reduce the likelihood of infections and other issues.

Amidst the costs of graduate school, restrictions of part-time work, housing instability, and the costs of various healthcare needs, Rosen did not have funds to cover post-operative care services. Now, zhe will be able to obtain post-operative care services, increasing his wellness during and after the recovery process! Considerably, post-operative care services will increase the positive impact of Rosen’s top surgery and overall gender affirming experience.

About Professional Caregiving Services

On average, it costs $5,000+ for Rosen's care.

What is it?

Professional caregiving services include support for trans individuals recovering from surgeries or managing chronic health conditions. This can involve tasks such as meal prep, personal hygiene, medication management, and emotional support.

What is life like for a person who needs this care?

Post-operative recovery can be challenging, especially for trans folks who lack a support system or have family members unwilling to help due to their gender identity. This lack of care can delay recovery and lead to complications.

How accessible is it for trans folks to receive this care?

Professional caregiving services are rarely covered by insurance unless deemed medically necessary. Even when covered, finding affirming caregivers who understand the unique needs of trans individuals can be difficult.

What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?

Having access to affirming caregiving services can significantly improve recovery outcomes, reduce stress, and provide a sense of safety and dignity during vulnerable times.
