Meet Quinn

Quinn's story
Annual Trans Surgery Fund recipient
Quinn (he/him) is a 32-year-old trans man seeking top surgery. Due to disability and other factors, he's been unable to work and has been trying to raise money through GoFundMe and other avenues. As someone who does not have insurance, Quinn has always known he'd have to pay for this procedure out of pocket, and with other obstacles like rent increases and car repair always taking precedence, he worried he would never get this opportunity.
When he's not knitting, designing stickers, or trying his hand at leather crafting, Quinn is also a proud member of his local gay men's chorus, and a casual enjoyer of PC games. His favourites include the Horizon: Zero Dawn series, Palworld, and Farm Together 2. He also enjoys trying out new flavour profiles in recipes, and is always trying to adapt things he finds online to fit his gluten-free requirements.
He's so excited to live his life without the crippling dysphoria (and back pain!) that came with having a large chest and is very much looking forward to feeling the sunshine on his torso in summers to come. The freedom to wear whatever he wants and still feel comfortable in his own skin has Quinn positively vibrating with joy.

What is it?
FTM/N top surgery is a surgical procedure that removes breast tissue and reshapes the chest contour to create a more traditionally masculine or gender-neutral appearance.
What is life like for a person who needs this care?
Prior to care, many trans masc people experience dysphoria that impacts their daily life. One of the most common and heartbreaking experiences we hear from applicants is that they cannot give hugs to their loved ones without feeling intense distress with their chest. In addition, reliance on chest binding can cause strain over long periods of time.
How accessible is it for trans folks to receive this care?
While top surgery is often categorized as a covered benefit in many insurance plans, the reality is that it's frequently denied coverage. Many people report unsuccessful attempts to appeal for coverage. In addition, finding skilled surgeons experienced in performing top surgery can be extremely challenging, particularly in states and regions most affected by anti-trans healthcare legislation.
What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?
Many trans folks who undergo top surgery report massive improvements to their overall well-being and mental health, leading to increased confidence and more comfort in relationships, navigating public spaces, and more.
