Nick

Nick's story

Electrolysis Support Fund recipient

Nick (he/him) is an 18-year-old trans man of color who faces significant financial challenges. He makes minimum wage and is only able to work about 15-20 hours per week, often taking time off to care for his disabled husband. To make ends meet, Nick also looks for side gigs on Craigslist, but opportunities are scarce.

Nick's journey has been incredibly tough, including getting hormones and surgery while in state custody as a minor. The financial strain of continuing his transition is breaking his heart. "I do not have the funds to support my transition much longer and that breaks my heart," Nick shares.

Nick dreams of finally being able to focus on who he is, rather than constantly worrying about his transition. Completing phalloplasty is a crucial step in this journey. "I would just like to be able to finally stop focusing on my transition and focus on who I am," he explains. Receiving these funds would mean the world to him, allowing him to move forward and live his life more fully and authentically. Nick has had multiple phalloplasty consults and hopes to schedule surgery with his chosen provider soon.

About Hair Removal: Masc Award

On average, it costs $1,700+ for Nick's care.

What is it?

Point of Pride provides grants to trans masc people seeking hair removal on an area of their body in preparation for bottom surgery.

What is life like for a person who needs this care?

Electrolysis and laser hair removal services are often deemed cosmetic and therefore not covered by health insurance plans, even if such services are medical prerequisites for a covered surgery. For people who cannot afford hair removal, they are stuck without options to move forward with their healthcare needs.

What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?

After completing hair removal, these folks are able to move forward with their surgeries. In itself, this often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, and more.
