Meet Nat
Nat's story
HRT Access Fund recipient
Nat (she/they) is a non-binary, two-spirit Native American currently facing significant barriers to accessing gender-affirming care. While enrolled in their state’s healthcare system, HRT is not covered by their provider.
Nat has developed a deep mistrust of doctors in their area due to negative experiences shared by friends and their own traumatic encounters in hospital settings. The few local programs that offer gender-affirming care have age limits, which Nat no longer qualifies for, leaving them with limited options.
After losing their job last year, Nat had to move back in with their parents to avoid homelessness. Despite getting a new job in September, they faced wage garnishments due to past debt, leaving them financially unstable and without savings. Nat struggles with the anxiety of re-entering the workforce, fearing discrimination for being themselves.
Receiving 12 months of HRT support would provide Nat with the opportunity to finally affirm their identity and feel at home in their body. It would be a crucial step towards finding self-love and peace amidst the challenges they face daily.

What is it?
Estrogen+ refers to the gender-affirming hormone replacement therapy (HRT) methods that some trans women, trans femme, and non-binary people take that result in physical changes which align with their gender identity. Every person's preferences and personal healthcare needs vary, so this can include oral medications, injections, and transdermal patches.
How accessible is it for trans folks to receive this care?
For trans folks who live in states most impacted by anti-trans healthcare legislation, it can be extremely difficult to find a knowledgeable, trans-affirming provider as well as access prescription medication. Many insurance plans do not cover HRT. For trans folks without insurance coverage, the ongoing out-of-pocket expense can be challenging.
What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?
Estogen+ introduces a wide range of feminizing physical, emotional, and psychological changes that align with their gender identity. This often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, increased safety when in public, and better opportunities at employment and more.
