Nancy's story
Thrive Fund recipient
Nancy (she/her) is an 18 year old, Black genderfluid fem presenting southerner. She lives day by day, worried that her lack of femininity will endanger her life in an already dangerous environment. Still living in extreme poverty, the last thing on her mind right now is gender-affording care. However, in the back of her brain, when she sees other beautiful Black fem presenting individuals, a nagging feeling eats away at how much she wishes she could look like them.
Nancy is an artist at her core. She loves to write - write about absolutely anything. Most of her stories are Queer, and explore many harsh, but real topics such as LGBTphobia, internalized LGBTphobia, and many more. She is also a huge cat lover, having nursed sicken kittens to health and adopting strays to give them a warm, forever home.
Gender-affirming healthcare will directly impact Nancy's day-to-day life in not only the sense that she can truly feel like herself, but also in the sense that she can feel more safe in an objectively conservative, transphobic small town in the South. The relief of having to not worry about spending money on gender-affirming care, while also being able to proudly present as who she is would lift so much weight off of her shoulders.

What is it?
Wigs can be a vital tool for trans individuals, particularly trans femme people, to express their gender identity. Wigs are often used to create a hairstyle that aligns with one's presentation, especially when natural hair growth is impacted by genetics, hormones, or medical treatments.
What is life like for a person who needs this care?
For trans folks experiencing hair loss or dysphoria around their natural hair, finding a solution that affirms their gender can feel daunting. Without access to an affirming wig, some individuals may avoid public spaces or social interactions due to discomfort or fear of discrimination.
How accessible is it for trans folks to receive this care?
High-quality wigs can be expensive, often costing hundreds of dollars. Most insurance plans do not cover the cost of wigs. Affordable options are often low quality, less durable, or unrealistic in appearance.
What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?
A well-fitted, high-quality wig can boost confidence, reduce gender dysphoria, and help trans individuals feel more aligned with their gender identity. It can also improve mental health by enabling self-expression and facilitating social integration.
