Max's story

Annual Trans Surgery Fund recipient

Max (they/them) is a nonbinary transmasc person seeking gender-affirming surgery. Managing an autoimmune disease, mental illness, and gender dysphoria takes up a significant portion of their time, making it difficult to maintain stable employment. While they work part-time, financial barriers—such as medical debt, hospitalizations, and the high cost of living—have made it nearly impossible to save for surgery. Currently living with family, Max is also focused on securing housing within the next year, adding another layer of financial stress.

Despite these challenges, Max has been proactive in finding ways to access gender-affirming care. They explored insurance, Medicaid, financing options, and extra jobs, but each avenue presented roadblocks—denials, exclusions, and unmanageable costs. After extensive research, Max chose a surgeon. They are also creating a support network to ensure they have help when needed.

Outside of their transition journey, Max finds comfort in music, whether listening to it or playing guitar. They dream of learning to play the drums and hope to travel the world someday, finding inspiration in different cultures and ways of living. This surgery would not only alleviate their dysphoria but also give them the confidence and stability to move forward in life, embracing both their identity and their passions.

About Body Contouring

On average, it costs $13,500+ for Max's care.

What is it?

Body contouring refers to a series of surgical procedures (often through liposuction) aimed at reshaping and sculpting the body to change its appearance to be more traditionally feminine or more traditionally masculine.

What is life like for a person who needs this care?

Before care, many trans people feel discomfort or distress over how their body shape aligns with their gender identity. Unwanted fat distribution or muscle definition can cause dysphoria and affect safety as well as confidence in daily life, social interactions, and clothing choices.

How accessible is it for trans folks to receive this care?

Body contouring is generally considered to be a cosmetic procedure, and so it is unlikely that health insurance will cover the cost. It can also be hard for trans femme folks to find trans-affirming surgeons in their region.

What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?

Many trans people who undergo body contouring experience an improved sense of self and alignment with their gender presentation. This can lead to greater confidence, ease in social settings, and overall mental well-being.
