Keenaanee's story

Keenaanee (she/they) is an Indigenous Two-Spirit femme from Virginia. "In 2021, I started my transition fully intending to pay for everything myself," Keenaanee shares. However, excessive discrimination created an out-of-control environment where she was not allowed to use the restrooms on campus. Dealing with the aftermath, they have since been unable to work. They spent their life savings on surgeries, laser treatments, and bills, and are still awaiting disability approval, which they filed for over a year and a half ago.
"I'm struggling and having to still shave daily after $4,000 in laser on my face alone is more than frustrating," Keenaanee says. Her fiancé is also trans and struggling financially. Neither of their families are supportive, leaving them without options to turn to.
Receiving support for electrolysis would significantly improve Keenaanee's quality of life, helping them feel more comfortable and confident in their identity while alleviating some of the financial and logistical burdens they face.

It's common for applicants to note issues with employment and public safety, particularly if their facial hair is dark or thick. Electrolysis and laser hair removal services are often deemed cosmetic and therefore not covered by health insurance plans.
