Meet Katrina

Katrina (she/her) is a 46-year-old, home-bound, differently-abled trans woman who survived a strict religious upbringing in Utah. At 41, she gained the courage to start loving herself and begin her transition, with shaving and makeup taking at least 3 hours each day. Due to a severe chronic illness, she faces significant health, mobility, and financial challenges. Before getting sick, Katrina worked longer than anyone in her department to save for electrolysis and surgery. However, her condition caused her to lose her job, her savings, and accumulate debt, leading to struggles with food and housing insecurity. Recently, she began working with Voc Rehab and, with a better support system (including Point of Pride), she is getting her personal and career transitions back on track.

“I feel honored and grateful to receive this grant from Point of Pride,” Katrina says. “For so many years, I worked myself to death, thinking I had to do everything on my own. I was always scared to ask for any kind of help. When I got sick and had to use my electrolysis/surgery savings for rent, I lost hope of ever being able to look in a mirror and see the woman I know I am inside. I despaired. Then I heard about Point of Pride’s electrolysis grant. I applied without daring to hope I would receive it. When I did, I was moved to tears. For most of my life, I was taught to suppress my most authentic self. I am now learning that I, too, have value. Thank you, Point of Pride, for showing me and other trans and non-binary people that we are worthy of support.”

Katrina is an award-winning writer and photographer, active in her local art community. Her photo work, often combined with her poetry, celebrates the beauty and color of Earth and its inhabitants, particularly the courage of small creatures seemingly unfazed by overwhelming danger. Katrina regularly exhibits and sells her photos in local galleries. She also provides administrative support to a women's mental health group and seeks to spread joy throughout her community.
