Meet Grant
Grant's story
Annual Trans Surgery Fund recipient
Grant (he/him) is a 34-year-old autistic trans man seeking top surgery. Low income in his field of work and specific career skills set has made moving forward financially—beyond being able to care for himself and his child—incredibly difficult. He had attempted GoFundMe to raise money for top surgery, but didn't get very far and found himself faced with other pressing financial demands. A lack of access to health insurance has meant he has paid for all transition costs out of pocket and has since regrettably put off the care he needs for several years.
Grant is a dedicated single father of one. He is deeply invested in his neighborhood, in creating connections with the people around him and in being a source of warmth, strength and love for his child, his partner, and his chosen family.
He's most looking forward to not having to deal with chest dysphoria anymore post top surgery. The last few summers have been increasingly difficult to navigate socially, and he's very excited to be able to be shirtless without concern and to finally let go of such a big source of discomfort and dysphoria. "Transition has been such a blessing in my life," Grant shares. "I never thought I would ever feel comfortable in my body, and this feels like the final piece I've been waiting for."

What is it?
FTM/N top surgery is a surgical procedure that removes breast tissue and reshapes the chest contour to create a more traditionally masculine or gender-neutral appearance.
What is life like for a person who needs this care?
Prior to care, many trans masc people experience dysphoria that impacts their daily life. One of the most common and heartbreaking experiences we hear from applicants is that they cannot give hugs to their loved ones without feeling intense distress with their chest. In addition, reliance on chest binding can cause strain over long periods of time.
How accessible is it for trans folks to receive this care?
While top surgery is often categorized as a covered benefit in many insurance plans, the reality is that it's frequently denied coverage. Many people report unsuccessful attempts to appeal for coverage. In addition, finding skilled surgeons experienced in performing top surgery can be extremely challenging, particularly in states and regions most affected by anti-trans healthcare legislation.
What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?
Many trans folks who undergo top surgery report massive improvements to their overall well-being and mental health, leading to increased confidence and more comfort in relationships, navigating public spaces, and more.
