Having socially transitioned over 20 years ago and medically transitioned in 2018, Ghost presents fully as male but continues to be seen otherwise by systems and institutions due to his outdated legal name and gender marker. These discrepancies have created barriers in securing jobs, housing, and essential services, limiting his opportunities despite his qualifications and readiness.
Ghost works part-time in government but earns little with no benefits, and his position is at risk of being eliminated. Despite his efforts, his income doesn't cover his rent or monthly bills, and he faces ongoing financial challenges, including maxed-out credit cards from unexpected surgical costs earlier this year. He lives in low-income housing and has navigated the stress of multiple eviction notices without familial support, making his journey even more challenging.
Updating his legal documents would be transformative for Ghost, alleviating the discrimination he faces in applying for jobs, housing, and medical care. This change would allow him to move through the world with the recognition and dignity he deserves, opening the door to stability and growth. Ghost’s strength and determination underscore his commitment to creating a better future for himself, despite the systemic barriers he continues to confront.
