Felix's story

Electrolysis Support Fund recipient

Felix (he/him) has faced numerous complications with his top surgery, which used up much more of his savings than he had planned. As a college student, he can only work 12 hours a week or less. Recovering from his top surgery revision has prevented him from working for a while, and his schedule this semester is very restrictive.

Felix is pursuing phalloplasty as quickly as possible because his future career often involves being outside in rural, queer-unsafe areas for extended periods. He is studying wildlife biology, and having phalloplasty before starting his career would make life much safer and easier. "It's my dream job, but I feel I can't start until after phallo because of the safety concerns, and most agencies don't cover trans care in their insurance," Felix shares.

Receiving support for prerequisite hair removal towards phalloplasty will enable him to focus on his studies and future career without the added stress of financial and safety concerns.

About Hair Removal: Masc Award

On average, it costs $1,700+ for Felix's care.

What is it?

Point of Pride provides grants to trans masc people seeking hair removal on an area of their body in preparation for bottom surgery.

What is life like for a person who needs this care?

Electrolysis and laser hair removal services are often deemed cosmetic and therefore not covered by health insurance plans, even if such services are medical prerequisites for a covered surgery. For people who cannot afford hair removal, they are stuck without options to move forward with their healthcare needs.

What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?

After completing hair removal, these folks are able to move forward with their surgeries. In itself, this often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, and more.
