Erica's story
Electrolysis Support Fund recipient
Erica (she/her) is a 31-year-old trans woman of color seeking electrolysis after beginning HRT in 2021 and completing multiple laser treatments over the past year. She has faced financial instability due to fluctuations in employment and hours caused by life events. Erica is currently in the process of undergoing facial feminization surgery and plans to use grant funds for electrolysis once she has recovered enough.
In her spare time, Erica enjoys skateboarding and has found freedom in the sport since 2005. She appreciates the community, where individuals from all walks of life treat each other with respect and kindness. When not skating, practicing guitar, or spending time with friends, Erica is an unpaid caregiver to an elderly family member and helps others whenever she can.
Receiving this opportunity for electrolysis would allow Erica to look in the mirror without facial hair, feel free from a masculine appearance, and continue her journey of shedding her past life and embracing her true identity. "This would help with alleviating anxiety as well as costs for hair removal products/services used to alleviate said anxiety," Erica shares. This support would significantly reduce her stress and help her move forward with greater confidence and peace of mind.

It's common for applicants to note issues with employment and public safety, particularly if their facial hair is dark or thick. Electrolysis and laser hair removal services are often deemed cosmetic and therefore not covered by health insurance plans.
