Danny

Danny's story

HRT Access Fund recipient

Danny (he/they) is a trans man and tattoo apprentice. Despite his passion for his craft, financial instability has made affording HRT difficult. Danny is currently saving up to move out of his current living situation, fix his car, and cover the costs of his daily medication. His parents have not been supportive of his transition and have refused to help him financially, leaving Danny to navigate his journey almost entirely on his own.

Danny is an artist at heart, with a love for acrylic painting, 3D modeling, drawing, and designing tattoos for work. He’s also a devoted animal lover, spending his free time caring for his pets and providing them with a secure, loving home.

For Danny, gender-affirming care would be transformative for his mental health. "I never expected to live this long, and I never expected to make it to the point where testosterone is right within reach," Danny shares. He looks forward to the confidence and comfort that HRT will bring, from feeling more at ease in his body to dressing more masculinely, dating, and even going to the gym. Danny is excited for a future where he finally feels at home in his own skin.

About Testosterone+

On average, it costs $1,200+/year for Danny's care.

What is it?

Testosterone+ refers to the gender-affirming hormone replacement therapy (HRT) methods that some trans men, trans masc, and non-binary people take that result in physical changes which align with their gender identity. Every person's preferences and personal healthcare needs vary, so this can include oral medications, injections, and transdermal patches.

How accessible is it for trans folks to receive this care?

For trans folks who live in states most impacted by anti-trans healthcare legislation, it can be extremely difficult to find a knowledgeable, trans-affirming provider as well as access prescription medication. Many insurance plans do not cover HRT. For trans folks without insurance coverage, the ongoing out-of-pocket expense can be challenging.

What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?

Testosterone+ introduces a wide range of masculinizing physical, emotional, and psychological changes that align with their gender identity. This often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, increased safety when in public, and better opportunities at employment and more.
