Connex's story

Annual Trans Surgery Fund recipient

Connex (he/him) is a Black trans man and dedicated human rights activist who has spent his life advocating for the LBTIQ+ community in Malawi. As the Vice chairperson of the Southern African Intersex Forum (SAIF) and an Advocacy and Grants Manager for the Ivy Foundation in Malawi, his work focuses on improving healthcare access, supporting survivors of gender-based violence, and addressing systemic inequalities. Despite his commitment to uplifting others, Connex has faced significant personal hardships—including the passing of his mother, losing his home due to his transgender identity, and navigating life without access to gender-affirming healthcare in Malawi.

For the first time, Connex has a unique opportunity to travel to the United States through a prestigious fellowship at a well known university. This milestone presents a rare chance for him to undergo top surgery while in the U.S., something that has been out of reach in Malawi, where such services do not exist. Connex has been diligently preparing for this journey, engaging with community members who have undergone surgery, researching every aspect of the procedure, and planning for his post-operative care. He is working to coordinate insurance options and find support networks that can assist him during recovery.

For Connex, top surgery represents a life-changing opportunity—one that would be impossible to access in his home country. With this surgery, Connex can move forward with confidence, continuing his work as a fierce advocate for marginalized communities while living as his authentic self.

About FTM Top Surgery

On average, it costs $12,000+ for Connex's care.

What is it?

FTM/N top surgery is a surgical procedure that removes breast tissue and reshapes the chest contour to create a more traditionally masculine or gender-neutral appearance.

What is life like for a person who needs this care?

Prior to care, many trans masc people experience dysphoria that impacts their daily life. One of the most common and heartbreaking experiences we hear from applicants is that they cannot give hugs to their loved ones without feeling intense distress with their chest. In addition, reliance on chest binding can cause strain over long periods of time.

How accessible is it for trans folks to receive this care?

While top surgery is often categorized as a covered benefit in many insurance plans, the reality is that it's frequently denied coverage. Many people report unsuccessful attempts to appeal for coverage. In addition, finding skilled surgeons experienced in performing top surgery can be extremely challenging, particularly in states and regions most affected by anti-trans healthcare legislation.

What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?

Many trans folks who undergo top surgery report massive improvements to their overall well-being and mental health, leading to increased confidence and more comfort in relationships, navigating public spaces, and more.
