Catan's story

Annual Trans Surgery Fund recipient

Catan (he/they) is a trans man seeking top surgery, a step that will bring him closer to feeling at home in his body. Their journey has been full of financial and personal obstacles—from losing his father at 16 to experiencing discrimination from a roommate after starting HRT. Though he has worked tirelessly to support themself, setbacks like unstable housing, unexpected car repairs, and the high cost of living have made saving for surgery nearly impossible. "Every time I manage to put money aside for surgery, something happens that wipes it out. But I keep going. I have to."

Despite the hardships, Catan remains determined. He has found a surgeon whose work he trusts and is actively fundraising to make surgery a reality. With the support of his partner and their family, he has a plan in place for travel and recovery. Their resilience is matched only by his generosity—he has spent years fostering kittens, organizing adoption events, and giving back to his community through art and volunteer work. "We need more love in the world. I want to inspire hope in others. That's what makes me, me. I'm a lover."

For Catan, this surgery is more than a procedure—it’s a chance to finally live in alignment with himself and to continue his mission of spreading kindness with confidence and joy.

About FTM Top Surgery

On average, it costs $12,000+ for Catan's care.

What is it?

FTM/N top surgery is a surgical procedure that removes breast tissue and reshapes the chest contour to create a more traditionally masculine or gender-neutral appearance.

What is life like for a person who needs this care?

Prior to care, many trans masc people experience dysphoria that impacts their daily life. One of the most common and heartbreaking experiences we hear from applicants is that they cannot give hugs to their loved ones without feeling intense distress with their chest. In addition, reliance on chest binding can cause strain over long periods of time.

How accessible is it for trans folks to receive this care?

While top surgery is often categorized as a covered benefit in many insurance plans, the reality is that it's frequently denied coverage. Many people report unsuccessful attempts to appeal for coverage. In addition, finding skilled surgeons experienced in performing top surgery can be extremely challenging, particularly in states and regions most affected by anti-trans healthcare legislation.

What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?

Many trans folks who undergo top surgery report massive improvements to their overall well-being and mental health, leading to increased confidence and more comfort in relationships, navigating public spaces, and more.
