Bunny Quinn

Bunny Quinn's story

Electrolysis Support Fund recipient

Bunny (she/they) has been supporting themselves through sex work since the age of 14. This work has become increasingly difficult over the last year due to severe back issues, including multiple herniated discs and spinal stenosis, as well as a frozen shoulder. These physical challenges make their work very painful. A little over a year ago, Bunny's husband left them after 23 years of marriage, leaving them about $30K in debt.

Facing considerable hatred and difficulty finding work in Texas, Bunny relocated and is currently a student with a 3.8 GPA. They are taking the winter off to do a tour and hopefully pay down some debt before returning to college in the spring. Bunny aims to transition to other forms of work as they cannot continue sex work indefinitely.

Suffering from CPTSD due to multiple violent events in Texas, Bunny shares that "facial electrolysis is my number one goal and is long overdue." Receiving this support will help alleviate a significant source of dysphoria and improve both their mental and physical well-being.

Bunny Quinn shared, "It was nice to not have to shave for four or five days, usually, I have to shave two times a day. It was really good to see some progress being made. They estimate 12-16 rounds total and then goodbye to having to rake a razor over my face and feeling disphoric AF first thing every morning!

[This access] means not having to be dysphoric and dreadful very first thing in the morning when I have to rake a razor across my face. Once it is complete, it will be nice to not feel like I have to shave and bathe first thing in the morning before even going to the corner store to pick something up"

About Hair Removal: Femme Award

On average, it costs $2,300+ for Bunny Quinn's care.

What is it?

Point of Pride provides grants to trans femme people seeking hair removal on their face, neck, or an area of the body in preparation for bottom surgery.

What is life like for a person who needs this care?

For trans femme folks, particularly trans femmes of color, access to facial hair removal often equates to safety against anti-trans violence or discrimination. It's common for applicants to note issues with employment and public safety, particularly if their facial hair is dark or thick. Electrolysis and laser hair removal services are often deemed cosmetic and therefore not covered by health insurance plans.

What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?

Access to hair removal often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, increased safety when in public, and better opportunities at employment and more.
