Briana's story

Briana (she/they) started her medical transition with HRT just over six months ago. However, about one month after starting, they were laid off from their job. Keeping her medication to stay on track with her medical transition became her number one focus, and it was the only “extra” she could afford due to her health insurance ending shortly after. Finding a new job has been difficult, especially as her face is changing more each week, making the job search early in her transition a far more uncomfortable experience than she had hoped for.
Despite these challenges, Briana finds a silver lining in how her face is starting to make her happy when she looks in the mirror. However, the joy fades as soon as she notices her permanent five o’clock shadow. She is excited for the relief hair removal will bring. "Being able to look in the mirror and really see myself would be indescribable," she says.

For trans femme folks, particularly trans femmes of color, access to facial hair removal often equates to safety against anti-trans violence or discrimination. It's common for applicants to note issues with employment and public safety, particularly if their facial hair is dark or thick. Electrolysis and laser hair removal services are often deemed cosmetic and therefore not covered by health insurance plans.
