Bibi's story

HRT Access Fund recipient

Bibi (she/her) is a proud POC and trans woman whose journey, despite being a year into medically transitioning, has faced significant obstacles. Living in Texas, she has struggled to find local healthcare providers who accept trans patients, leading to a frustrating delay in her medical transition. The lack of accessible care has caused her to repeatedly postpone essential treatments, leaving her feeling disconnected from her true self. After moving to Texas to improve her financial situation, Bibi has been met with further challenges, battling geographical and financial barriers that make accessing the care she needs feel nearly impossible.

Outside of her identity, Bibi is deeply passionate about film, gaming, and the arts. For her, these interests are more than just pastimes—they’ve been a refuge, offering comfort and safety in a world that has often felt unkind. Known for her keen eye, she’s the friend who’s always analyzing the storytelling, style, and production of films, whether it’s appreciating cinematic techniques or diving into the nuances of game design. Bibi’s love for these creative outlets reflects her desire to explore and learn from any medium that allows for self-expression.

For Bibi, receiving gender-affirming healthcare is more than just aligning her body with her identity—it’s about reclaiming her life and well-being. This care is essential for her daily survival, providing the affirmation and security she needs to live authentically. Without it, Bibi faces profound challenges to her mental health and sense of self, making even everyday moments a struggle. For her, gender-affirming care isn’t just a medical necessity—it’s the foundation for a future where she can fully embrace who she is and thrive, rather than merely exist.

About Estrogen+

On average, it costs $1,700+/year for Bibi's care.

What is it?

Estrogen+ refers to the gender-affirming hormone replacement therapy (HRT) methods that some trans women, trans femme, and non-binary people take that result in physical changes which align with their gender identity. Every person's preferences and personal healthcare needs vary, so this can include oral medications, injections, and transdermal patches.

How accessible is it for trans folks to receive this care?

For trans folks who live in states most impacted by anti-trans healthcare legislation, it can be extremely difficult to find a knowledgeable, trans-affirming provider as well as access prescription medication. Many insurance plans do not cover HRT. For trans folks without insurance coverage, the ongoing out-of-pocket expense can be challenging.

What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?

Estogen+ introduces a wide range of feminizing physical, emotional, and psychological changes that align with their gender identity. This often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, increased safety when in public, and better opportunities at employment and more.
