Meet Angel
Angel's story
Annual Trans Surgery Fund recipient
Angel (he/him) is a trans man of color from Texas currently seeking top surgery. Angel has a physical disability and receives SSI, which is "just enough for my rent and cell phone bill." The SSI has a cap on the number of hours he is able to work, which affects his ability to save towards care. He juggles part-time employment with their education as a current university student.
Access to gender-affirming care has been transformative for Angel. "I can’t explain the joy I have had as I see who I am becoming: I am healthier, mentally and spiritually," he shares. "I can't wait to give back to my community by teaching art and inspiring future generations to become their best possible version of themselves."

Angel shared, "I want to thank Point of Pride and yourself for all you have done. I truly appreciate your efforts, and I even get emotional thinking about it. Everything was a success, and I am now in recovery. I will follow up in two weeks. When I looked at my results yesterday, I was in shock. I pray and hope that one day I can help others, changing their lives for the better, just as mine has been changed. This journey has been a great experience, with all of you by my side to help and guide me."

What is it?
FTM/N top surgery is a surgical procedure that removes breast tissue and reshapes the chest contour to create a more traditionally masculine or gender-neutral appearance.
What is life like for a person who needs this care?
Prior to care, many trans masc people experience dysphoria that impacts their daily life. One of the most common and heartbreaking experiences we hear from applicants is that they cannot give hugs to their loved ones without feeling intense distress with their chest. In addition, reliance on chest binding can cause strain over long periods of time.
How accessible is it for trans folks to receive this care?
While top surgery is often categorized as a covered benefit in many insurance plans, the reality is that it's frequently denied coverage. Many people report unsuccessful attempts to appeal for coverage. In addition, finding skilled surgeons experienced in performing top surgery can be extremely challenging, particularly in states and regions most affected by anti-trans healthcare legislation.
What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?
Many trans folks who undergo top surgery report massive improvements to their overall well-being and mental health, leading to increased confidence and more comfort in relationships, navigating public spaces, and more.
