Angel's story

Electrolysis Support Fund recipient

Angel (she/her) is a 45-year-old trans woman seeking electrolysis/laser hair removal. She is on disability and the cost out of pocket is extremely expensive. She feels like these procedures will help her to gain a new lease on life and the ability to maneuver through society comfortable in her skin.

"It's been a long journey, and this will help with the burden of dealing with facial hair and the side eyes [from others.] It's a chance to be 'free,'" she shares. "I've been struggling with facial hair and the side effects of constant shaving on my face for so long I don't even remember what I look like without them. The dark spots, the razor bumps, the bumpy texture that can't even be covered up with makeup has made me a recluse... It will be a joy to join the world of the living and be able to breathe and participate without having to check with my face."

Angel shared, "[My quality of life has changed] tremendously! Although I'm still not exactly where I want to be, I'm most certainly headed in the right direction. I'm still trying to work on the dark spotting scarring years of shaving have created. But having not to shave as often is allowing my skin to heal some...I don't get new scarring or new dark spots. In turn, applying makeup is easier..that I have to shave doesn't look as obvious..the cruelty of people figuring me out and endangering my safety because of feels like part of the burden alleviated."

About Hair Removal: Femme Award

On average, it costs $2,300+ for Angel's care.

What is it?

Point of Pride provides grants to trans femme people seeking hair removal on their face, neck, or an area of the body in preparation for bottom surgery.

What is life like for a person who needs this care?

For trans femme folks, particularly trans femmes of color, access to facial hair removal often equates to safety against anti-trans violence or discrimination. It's common for applicants to note issues with employment and public safety, particularly if their facial hair is dark or thick. Electrolysis and laser hair removal services are often deemed cosmetic and therefore not covered by health insurance plans.

What is the impact of this care on the recipient’s life?

Access to hair removal often leads to a more positive emotional well-being, increased confidence, increased safety when in public, and better opportunities at employment and more.
