Point of Pride Condemns Federal Trans Sports Ban, Highlights Far-Reaching Harm

February 6, 2025
Point of Pride strongly condemns today’s executive order calling for a ban on transgender inclusion in sport. This order not only excludes trans and gender diverse individuals from participating in sports, but also sets a dangerous precedent for the erosion of legal recognition of trans people’s gender identities across the United States.
Sports have long been recognized as a critical avenue for promoting physical and mental health, building community, and fostering personal growth. For trans individuals, access to sports programs and activities can be a lifeline, offering a safe and affirming space to thrive.
This directive cruelly strips away these opportunities, forcing trans athletes to choose between their identity and their right to participate in activities that enrich their lives.
"Access to sports benefits everyone, regardless of age or ability," said Chris Mosier, Team USA athlete, five-time National Champion, and member of Point of Pride’s Board of Directors. "Sports can be a space to build confidence, connect with others, and develop resilience. This ban denies us those critical opportunities and sends a clear message that our identities are not valued or respected."
The implications go far beyond the realm of sports.
"This decision is just one of several calculated moves that seek to undermine the civil rights of trans people nationwide,” said Jeff Main, Executive Director of Point of Pride. "We call on community members and allies to speak out, contact your elected officials, and advocate against this harmful decision. Together, we must resist efforts to erase us from public life, and defend our right to exist and thrive."
Point of Pride remains committed to supporting our trans siblings through direct services and advocacy, even as challenges shift or intensify.
