Affirming Trans Youth is Healthcare, Not Harm

April 4, 2025
In light of Thursday’s federal proclamation that baselessly characterizes providing gender-affirming care as “child abuse,” Point of Pride wants to speak directly to trans people, and the parents and people who love them: You are not alone. You deserve care that affirms you, supports you, and helps you thrive.
The harmful rhetoric within this proclamation is not just inaccurate—it’s dangerous. It spreads fear, isolates families, and attempts to undermine the dignity and autonomy of trans youth. But we want to be clear: trans people are not broken. Trans youth are not being “abused.” And supporting a young person in exploring their identity or accessing medically necessary care is not just compassionate—it’s life-saving.
“Allowing youth to transition is not child abuse. Whether it’s a parent using their child’s name, or a doctor providing HRT, or a counselor helping a young person feel safe in their body—these are affirming acts of love,” said Aydian Dowling, Chief Advancement Officer and co-founder of Point of Pride. “To trans youth and the people who love them: we believe in you. And we will never stop fighting for your right to live fully, safely, and with pride.”
Every major medical association in the United States agrees: gender-affirming care is evidence-based, age-appropriate, and essential. Studies show that trans youth who receive this care experience significant improvements in mental health, including:
- A 73% reduction in suicidality among trans youth who begin hormone therapy.
- A 40% drop in suicide attempts over the course of a year for trans youth who received affirming care.
- Significant reductions in anxiety and depression when puberty blockers are used.
“It’s natural to feel overwhelmed by executive orders and proclamations like this,” says Jeff Main, Executive Director and co-founder of Point of Pride. “But the truth is this: families who affirm their trans kids are doing the right thing. And we’re here to stand with you—not just in crisis, but in celebration of the full, authentic lives trans youth can live when they’re supported.”
Across the country and around the world, Point of Pride continues to provide access to gender-affirming care for those who need it most. We remain committed to uplifting one another—not just in the face of fear or misinformation, but with joy, trust, and a belief in brighter futures.
Point of Pride's mission is help trans youth and adults access necessary, life-saving health and wellness services. To date, Point of Pride has awarded $3,419,000 in financial aid and provided gender-affirming support to 27,000 people in all 50 states and around the world.
