Point of Pride Responds to Biden Administration’s Position on Gender-Affirming Surgery for Youth
July 3, 2024
Point of Pride expresses concern over the Biden administration's recent statement confirming its stance that gender-affirming surgery should be limited to adults. The decision, while aligned with current medical practices, is problematic in that it lends credibility to misleading narratives that are being used to target transgender youth.
“Surgeries for trans youth are extremely rare and are considered only after years of comprehensive, case-by-case healthcare,” said Jeff Main, Executive Director of Point of Pride. “Despite this, anti-trans groups continue to spread harmful misinformation suggesting these surgeries are common. The administration’s position risks reinforcing these false claims, which only further stigmatizes trans youth.”
The reality is that healthcare for transgender youth is grounded in decades of clinical research and is endorsed by every major medical association in the United States. Point of Pride remains firm in its support of evidence-based care and the rights of trans youth and their families.
“We trust families and healthcare providers to make informed, compassionate decisions,” added Aydian Dowling, Chief Advancement Officer. “Everyone—whether trans or cis—deserves the right to make personal medical decisions without political interference. This isn’t just about trans rights; it’s about respecting autonomy and protecting access to necessary healthcare.”
Point of Pride stands committed to advocating for the trans community, especially during this critical time when misinformation continues to be weaponized against vulnerable populations.
Point of Pride's mission is help trans youth and adults access necessary, life-saving health and wellness services. To date, Point of Pride has awarded $2,750,000 in financial aid and provided gender-affirming support to 22,000 people in all 50 states and around the world.
