Point of Pride Launches the Trans in Custody Project to Provide Gender-Affirming Support to Incarcerated Trans People

July 25, 2020

Point of Pride is proud to announce the launch of the Trans in Custody Project, a new initiative aimed at providing actionable resources and support to incarcerated transgender individuals and their support networks. The project includes resource guides and the expansion of Point of Pride’s free chest binder donation program to serve trans people in custody.

The first guide released through this initiative offers support and guidance to counselors in correctional facilities who work directly with transgender individuals. In the future, Point of Pride will release additional guides targeted at LGBTQ+ organizations and the friends, family, and loved ones of those in custody.

“As part of this project, we are expanding our free chest binder and femme shapewear programs to ensure trans people in custody can access the gender-affirming garments they need,” said Jeff Main, Executive Director of Point of Pride. “Access to gender-affirming care and support is essential for promoting safety, health, and successful reentry into society.”

Point of Pride is committed to supporting those most vulnerable in the trans community, especially those facing discrimination and violence while incarcerated. The organization will expedite binder requests from people in custody and provide up to two chest binders per individual, with no cost to the recipient or the correctional facility.

In alignment with organizations like Trans Lifeline and Black and Pink, Point of Pride stands in solidarity with advocacy efforts for prison abolition. Until that vision is realized, the organization will continue to provide essential support to trans individuals living in incarceration.
