Point of Pride Condemns Nationwide Surge of Anti-Trans Healthcare Legislation

Point of Pride is deeply troubled by the passage of Mississippi’s anti-trans healthcare bill, which comes just days after similar legislation was passed in South Dakota. These laws are part of a disturbing trend, with at least 97 anti-trans bills introduced across 26 states this year alone, threatening to ban or limit access to gender-affirming care for both trans youth and adults.

“It is extremely concerning to see the rapid introduction of broad legislation targeting the trans community," said Tyler Rodriguez, Program Manager at Point of Pride. "As we've done in the past, we will continue to monitor current and future proposed legislation. We're keeping a close eye on Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Texas, and other states at risk of healthcare bans for youth and adults, and are ready to pivot our resources to support those most in need. Know that we see you, and you are not alone.”

The psychological toll of this legislation on the trans community, especially young people, is devastating. Data from The Trevor Project shows that 86% of transgender and nonbinary youth report negative mental health impacts from the debates surrounding these bills, with nearly one in three saying they no longer feel safe seeking medical care when sick or injured. Even when these bills do not become law, the harm caused by their introduction is profound.

Point of Pride stands in unwavering solidarity with the trans youth and adults affected by these harmful policies.

"Trans people belong everywhere, in our fullness, as our authentic selves. We will not be erased," added Jeff Main, Board Secretary and co-founder.

Point of Pride remains committed to providing direct support to those impacted by anti-trans legislation and will continue to advocate for the rights and safety of transgender individuals nationwide.

Point of Pride's mission is help trans youth and adults access necessary, life-saving health and wellness services. To date, Point of Pride has awarded $2,220,000 in financial aid and provided gender-affirming support to 22,000 people in all 50 states and around the world.
