Stop Asian Hate: Point of Pride’s Commitment to Supporting AAPI Trans Folks this Heritage Month

May 1, 2021

For those unfamiliar with the intersection of the Asian-American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community and the dual legacies of colonialism and white supremacy, the recent news accounts of anti-Asian hate incidents may feel surprising. Yet the origins of what we are seeing today stretch back to cover decades of marginalization and exploitation.

As part of our continuing commitment to supporting historically excluded peoples with radical transparency, we want to share some program data. To date, our COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund has provided microgrant financial assistance to 460 trans people, of whom 75% are trans people of color. 7% of all applicants identify as AAPI, and we’ve funded 43% of them.

In April, we offered a solidarity message of support to our AAPI siblings. Today, in recognition of May as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we commit to funding at least 75% of AAPI applicants this month as available financial resources allow. We’ve expanded our Resources list with an AAPI-centered collection of information and links to other non-profit organizations and support resources. We also acknowledge the need to center and uplift voices in the community – voices that are too often expected to be silent. Below, we’ve collected a list of resources to learn more from members of the AAPI and/or LGBTQ+ community.

If you have suggestions on how we can continue to improve our support of the AAPI community, please send them to CovidReliefFund@pointofpride.org. As you are able to, we also appreciate any donations that you make or request on Point of Pride’s behalf so that we can continue to support our AAPI siblings. (Please forward your donation receipt or send an email to CovidReliefFund@pointofpride.org so that we ensure your donation is allocated to the COVID fund and benefits AAPI recipients. Thank you for your generosity!)

To read more about the history of the diverse and beautiful AAPI community, especially the members of our LGBTQ+ family, please consider following these activists, artists, leaders, and organizations:
