Point of Pride Reaffirms Solidarity and Support for the Black Community

Point of Pride stands in unwavering solidarity with the Black community during these critical times, recognizing the ongoing fight against systemic racism and oppression. While Point of Pride has always prioritized trans femme individuals, people of color, members of the disability community, and elders in its work, the organization is now called to be more explicit in its commitment to supporting the Black community.

“Racism continues to take a profound toll on the Black community, and we must be intentional about dismantling systems of oppression wherever they exist," said Liz Byrne, Board member of Point of Pride. "We stand with the Black community. You matter. Your life matters. We value and support you.”

In response to the urgent need for support, Point of Pride has taken actionable steps to assist Black individuals during this critical time. To date, 75% of the organization's COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund has been allocated to people of color, 44% of whom identify as Black. For the month of June, Point of Pride commits to ensuring that at least 75% of relief funds go to Black-identified recipients.

In addition, with the postponement of the Philly Trans Wellness Conference, Point of Pride has reallocated the entire budget reserved for the event to provide direct financial assistance to between five and eight additional Black community members, depending on their specific requests.

“Our commitment is not just about words, but about accountability and action,” Byrne added. “We are dedicated to continuing our support by providing monetary resources and amplifying the voices of Black activists and organizations.”

Point of Pride is steadfast in its pledge to stand with the Black community, ensuring that their voices, needs, and lives are prioritized in the ongoing struggle for equality and justice.

Point of Pride's mission is help trans youth and adults access necessary, life-saving health and wellness services. To date, Point of Pride has awarded $2,220,000 in financial aid and provided gender-affirming support to 22,000 people in all 50 states and around the world.
