Point of Pride Awards $9,000 to 2017 Trans Surgery Fund Recipients

February 11, 2017

Point of Pride is thrilled to announce that $9,000 in financial assistance has been awarded to two recipients, Armaan and Caden, through the 2017 Annual Trans Surgery Fund. This marks the largest total ever awarded to recipients in a single year.

  • Armaan from Washington – awarded $6,000 towards gender-affirming surgery. Armaan’s application touched the hearts of the Board, sharing his journey as a deeply religious Punjabi transgender man, his survival of conversion therapy, and the financial challenges he faces as a student.

  • Caden from Oregon – awarded $3,000 towards gender-affirming surgery. Caden’s story highlights his work as an LGBTQ+ advocate on campus, his experience navigating life as a Black trans man, and his financial need after the loss of his father.

In addition to these grants, Point of Pride will work closely with Caden to secure trans-inclusive health insurance to cover the remaining costs of his surgery. The organization will also continue supporting other finalists in navigating insurance and healthcare options to ensure they can access the care they need.

“We are so proud to be able to support these remarkable individuals as they move forward with their surgeries,” said Aydian Dowling, Board President of Point of Pride. “Their stories are a reminder of the challenges trans people face in accessing life-saving healthcare, and we are committed to helping as many people as we can.”

Applications for the 2018 cycle will open on November 1, 2017.

Point of Pride's mission is help trans youth and adults access necessary, life-saving health and wellness services. To date, Point of Pride has awarded $2,750,000 in financial aid and provided gender-affirming support to 22,000 people in all 50 states and around the world.
