The Power of a Letter: Spreading Love and Support This Holiday Season

Collage of letters

As the holiday season approaches, many of us find ourselves reflecting on the importance of connection and community. At Point of Pride, we’ve seen how something as simple as a handwritten letter can make a profound impact. A heartfelt card can remind someone that they are seen, supported, and valued—a message that’s especially meaningful for trans youth and adults navigating challenges accessing healthcare or other essential resources.

This season, we’re inviting you to join us in spreading love and encouragement through our letter-writing initiative. Your cards are discretely mailed alongside support packages to trans folks in need, with 88% of recipients being trans youth under the age of 24. Each letter becomes a source of hope and affirmation, sent directly to those who need it most.

Writing letters with Point of Pride is a flexible, creative way to provide one-to-one support, helping trans people feel seen and valued. And because we ship out hundreds of packages every month, letters are always needed and appreciated.

To add a personal touch to this effort, we’re encouraging everyone to take on a small, friendly challenge: write one card for a trans recipient and one for someone in your life. Here's how.

Organize a "Secret Snowperson" exchange with your loved ones

Friends hold up their letters and smile for a photoGather some friends, family, chosen family, colleagues—anyone in your life who might want to participate in writing cards of support for trans youth and adults. Before you begin, write the names of each participant down on a piece of paper and shuffle them in a bowl. Have everyone draw a name, and then write a heartfelt card for their match.

This idea was inspired by participants at the 2024 Philadelphia Trans Wellness Conference who told our staff how profound their experience of letter-writing was when they made sure participants each got their own note, too. One person shared, “Everyone in our group was crying happy tears by the end. It was such a beautiful way to connect with one another, get a little vulnerable, and say those things that too often go unsaid.”

Your words—whether for a stranger or a loved one—can make a lasting impact. A few sentences of kindness and care can become a cherished keepsake, a moment of joy, or a source of comfort during a challenging time.

Not sure where to start? Here are some tips:

  • Be authentic. Write from the heart, letting your words reflect your kindness and care.
  • Keep it simple. A few sentences or a short paragraph is all it takes to make someone’s day.
  • Add a personal touch. For loved ones, share a memory or compliment unique to them.

This holiday season, let’s come together to spread love, support, and joy—one letter at a time. Get started here with instructions, sample messages, and more

Thank you for helping us uplift and empower the trans community with your thoughtful words. From all of us at Point of Pride, we wish you and your loved ones a joyful and meaningful holiday season!
